Submissions Open Through 4/30 (and Transparency Stats from our Animals contest)

If you have something you think would be perfect for After Happy Hour, now’s your time to send it! Submissions are open now through April 30th for our Summer 2024 online issue. This issue is un-themed and open to work in any and all genres and styles. Head to our Submittable page to see genre guidelines and send your work. A few notes and reminders:

  • We can take a maximum of 300 free submissions every month, and we often hit that quota before the month ends. If you head to the page in late March and free submissions are closed, check back at the start of April when our quota resets (expedited subs don’t have a quota and are always open).
  • We read anonymously, so make sure to double check that you’ve taken your name out of your submission file before you send it!
  • The only category not yet open is the Feedback for Donations option. We’re waiting to open that until we’ve responded to all of the contest entries, which we hope to by mid-March. We’ll post here with the new donation target charity when that category opens!

…speaking of the contest, we were thrilled by the response from submitters this year! Yinz have a lot of thoughts and opinions on animals, apparently, and we had a blast reading them. The editors are busily deciding which ones will fit the best in this spring’s issue. We’ll announce the prize winners and contributors in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, here are some stats on the contest entries (in keeping with our mission to operate the contest as transparently as possible):

  • We received 178 entries total to this year’s contest (almost double the number we got last year!)
  • 31 submitters pre-ordered a copy
  • Together, entries and preorders totaled $1,935 ($1,646.88, after Submittable’s cut), which means:
    • $870.75 will be split between the winner(s) and honorable mention(s)
    • The remaining $776.13 will go toward printing the issue, paying contributors, and a donation to a local animal shelter

It’s exciting that the contest has been growing year after year, and we can’t wait to share the incredible work from this most recent one with the world when the issue comes out in May.
